Ridgeway Community Church of the Brethren has been raising money for the Witness Commission through the SCRIP Program (www.glscrip.com). SCRIP is fundraising while you shop. If we all participate, including friends and family, we could really help Witness Commission to witness to our community and world.

 

How scrip generates revenue for you.

The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Your organization buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to your organization members for full face value. The bulk of the discount - from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained by your organization as revenue.

SCRIP is "shopping cart fundraising”.

The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization --without spending an additional penny.

Here is how it works:

  1. You figure out where you will be shopping at least a week ahead of time.
  2. Give your order and payment for the total face value to Greg Bidgood Enders (or send it to the church). Make checks payable to Ridgeway Community Church of the Brethren and write SCRIP in the memo line. Your order will not be placed until your payment is in the church’s account.
  3. Greg will then place the order when enough orders are received in order to cover the cost of shipping and gain a profit.
  4. SCRIP will process the order and send all gift cards to the church.
  5. Your order will be ready to be picked up the following Sunday from when Greg places the entire order with SCRIP. Usual order day is Tuesday with shipment arriving Friday of the same week.
  6. If there is not enough to place an order on a given week, Greg will let you know and order the following week or as soon as there is enough to place an order with SCRIP.
  7. You then use your gift cards as you would normally pay for your purchases. The percentage the church receives remains in the church’s account when the order is placed. (Example: Let’s say you spend $500 a month on groceries at Giant. Giant gives 4% to the non-profit organization. For every $500 you spend at Giant, the church receives $20, but only when you order gift cards through SCRIP).
  8. Plan ahead and make it a regular practice to order your gifts cards, raising money for the church while you shop. Some people have a regular, standard order, for which they pay once a month. You may choose to order once a month or every week. Do what fits your shopping schedule and budget.
